Pangot just 15 km from Nainital in Uttarakhand state is one of India’s beautiful hamlets. The feeling around here is like being in a remote Himalayan village and going by the records of Jungle Lore Birding Lodge, the area boasts of having over 250 bird species.  Located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, Pangot is the epitome of natural beauty. Dotted with Oak and Pine trees and interspersed with gurgling brooks, this sleepy little hamlet plays host to a plethora of rare Himalayan species. Birds like Cheer Pheasant, Crested Kingfisher, Black-headed Jay, Slaty-backed Forktail, White-rumped Vulture, Himalayan Vulture, and many different species of Laughingthrush could be found playing hide and seek among the trees. Pangot also has many amazing nature trails, the trek to Cheena peak via Kilbury being the most rewarding one.  Pangot has some easy walks through rich oak and rhododendron forests. Just take a stroll through the village and its forests while listening to the birds twittering and flitting through the air. Cheer Pheasant, which is really a rare bird elsewhere, can be found here in substantial numbers, and spotting one is definitely a thrill.

Get ready for the pick-up from Sukhatal bus stop ( at 0600 hours in the morning and drive to Pangot. It’s around a 35 minutes drive ( Reached Pangot at 0635 hours. We will first take you to the Jungle Lore Birding Lodge, the Lodge is India's first and foremost birding lodge and has been key to birding success in the region to enjoy a hot cup of coffee/tea at the dining deck. The area near the dining deck also serves as a feeding ground for the birds who turn up every day without fail. Sit back and take time to finish your tea/coffee as you watch the birds feed and soak in the fresh mountain air.

Early morning proceeds for the birding tour with your guide. You will go for a short and very interesting hike towards Kilbury to see the feeding flocks. Packed breakfast will be served.

We spent the day birding at Cheer point and Kilbury [6500-7500 feet]. The walks can be done at a very easy pace. We will encounter an excellent selection of Himalayan species including Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon, Blue-winged Minla, Spotted and Slaty-backed Forktail, Rufous-bellied Woodpecker, Rufous-bellied Niltava, and Khalij Pheasant. The numerous perennial and seasonal creeks are home to an amazing variety of flora and fauna including Leopard, Himalayan Palm Civet, Yellow-throated Himalayan Martin, Ghoral, Sambhar, and Barking Deer.

Return to the lodge for lunch at 1200 in the afternoon. Take a break after a delicious kumaoni lunch. Then, at 1430 hours, walk through the scenic lanes of Baggar, Timla Pani for another birding session. 

These walks can be very rewarding

One can see Cheer, Koklass,s, and Khalij, Crested Serpent-eagle, Mountain Hawk-eagle, Woodpeckers such as Brown-fronted, Stripe-breasted, Rufous Bellied, etc. Thrushes such as Darkthroated, Mistle, etc. Striated Prinia can be seen in the terraced fields. Warblers such as Tickell's Leaf-warbler, Greenish, Golden-spectacled, Grey-hooded. Flycatchers such as Asian Brown, Rusty-tailed, Ultramarine, Verditer, Tickell's Blue, Rufous-bellied Niltava, etc., Orange-flanked Bush Robin, Blue-capped Redstart. Laughingthrushes such as White-throated, Striated & Streaked, Chestnut-crowned, etc. Look for Accentor, Upland Pipit, Blue-winged Minla, Whiskered Yuhina, etc. Slaty-headed & Red-breasted Parakeet, Grey Bushchat, Long-tailed & Grey-backed Shrike, Common Kestrel, Besra, Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush, etc. Streaked Laughing Thrush is a common garden bird here.

Return to the lodge in the evening. We will drop you off at Nainital at 1700 hours. (Tour End).
